In my early fandom days, I used to role play a lot with a friend in Skype. We'd start talking about a scenario between characters and then it would turn into a full back and forth as we each played a character. One of them got so intense I turned it into a fanfiction series [The Cliffs of Delphi Victorian AU for the Transformers IDW MTMTE comics].

I even tried to role play a little bit on Tumblr for Transformers OCs, though it didn't last long. [Silver Gun and Citizen Backfire are both still there if you want to look at archives.]

Role Playing is one of those things that I enjoyed, but also had a hard time connecting with people to do. I had no idea what I was doing when I was around people who hard-core role played online. Lol.

I have been browsing around a little bit at Dreamwidth roleplaying communities, and they honestly look like a lot of fun.

But again, I have no idea what I'm doing or where to start, or even if I'd want to do Fandom Role Play or Original (This is a lie, I'd rather do Fandom Role Play. Lol. If I'm writing original, I need to be working on my novels. XD).

Part of me just wants to start my own Role Play community and put whatever I want there. But then I need people to come join me to actually role play with. XD

The above fic is my first major, serious project for an OC x a Canon character and I figured this was as good a time as any to share it here.

Why you ask? This:

I was sitting there browsing my reading page and saw The Importance of Self-Inserts by mllemusketeer and it made me think about my own relationship with OCs and how they've changed over the years.

Honestly, I sort of avoided them for a while and when I did include them in my own fics, they were always support characters to push the plot along. They were never main characters, or in the one time where I did venture into making a main character OC it was because I didn't have a canon character equivalent to do what I wanted.**

And then I discovered the Life in Glass Houses series by Blueskyscribe and I adored their TF OCs. To death. I loved the main character ones. I totally supported the shipping of those OC characters x the canon ones & even had a (short lived) RP blog for one of them. It was one of the first times I found original characters that didn't feel like they were shoved in or out of place and it entirely changed my opinion on OC characters.

I dabbled a little bit with OCs after that in Transformers myself (I had a lot of robot babies & I had the Twins Low Gear & High Gear for the Cliffs of Delph series I was RP'ing with Rothinsel), but they were still pretty contained to AU land.

Then the My Hero Academia bug bit and I needed a third person for a Love Triangle AU I wanted to write and BAM. My first shameless OC x Main Character Fic.

And people liked it. I was blown away by how many people were rooting for the OC by the end of the fic and it was the first time that it hit me that feelings toward OCs were changing.

I have a friend who pretty much only reads and writes OC x Canon character fics and pairings for fandoms she's in and it's fun to see how much things has changed.

The stigma is still there, but it's fun to see it slowly drift away.

And it makes me want to do a sequel to the above fic where Daiki (the OC) gets his man back. Lol. I felt bad for breaking up his relationship by the end of it. XD

He's not a self insert, but he deserves some love. :P

**As I was writing all of this it did occur to me there was a point in time where I did have a shameless Self Insert Character (It was a character I designed to be "Liliy" with like teal hair) that I used as myself you can still find around my old DA stuff. Lol. I had a whole story arc with a Digimon partner and a crush on Ken from the second series and all that fun embarrassing stuff. I keep forgetting about it because I keep forgetting about that entire period of my life despite having a website dedicated to it.

I digress. The point is, everyone did it. It's fun. No need to pick on people who do it.
