Bless the Statistics Page

I will say one thing about AO3, I like that it allows me to see how many actual bookmarks there are on a fic from the statistics page.
Because the Statistics page count includes Private & Hidden bookmarks. So stories I think aren't that popular...have like an extra hundred private bookmarks.
And then I remember the fics that tend to have the most Hidden book marks are the A/B/O ones. Lol. And I'm like "Right. Some people don't want others to know they read those fics."
Heck, I was one of them for a bit (but it wasn't just A/B/O - it was any E-Rated fic).
So, not judging the private bookmarks. Just amused. XD
(I remembered to post something today! Huzzah! I do check my reading page every day lol. I just forget to write things here.)

Date: Jun. 7th, 2020 05:51 pm (UTC)It's definitely a learning curve, getting comfortable letting your freak flag fly... especially since I think A/B/O gets picked on a lot in certain circles.
Hell, I remember going to a panel entitled something along the lines of "A Feminist View of Fanfiction" and it was just the most awful take possible on that subject, complete with the speaker sighing exasperatedly into the microphone between deeply incorrect takes on common tropes (she thought hurt/comfort was when it was one partner doing both the hurting and the comforting???) and she really hated A/B/O. I still remember feeling both angry and guilty about feeling angry about that, because it was while Tumblr was still functional and I was still coming down off the "oh my god other people care about social justice" high, and just hitting the "wait a minute, a bunch of what these people are saying is really fucked up" letdown. I knew what I was hearing was mean and wrong, but it was couched in language that had been, until then, "good".
It really does boil down to policing other people's sexualities, doesn't it... At least I've found more older fans now, who've been there and seen that and even gotten the novelty t-shirt and are just fresh out of fucks. May all those shy fans with hidden bookmarks find similar communities.
Anyway, probably a longer and more serious comment than you were expecting, but it got me thinking!

That being said, I don't hate private bookmarks. People have a lot of reasons to not want to share and that's fine.
Still makes me sad though. I usually end up crawling through people's bookmarks to look for fic recs. Lol. If I enjoy an author's writing, I'll probably also like their taste in reading so it's a great way to find stuff. XD
